This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
After watching Jessabelle I had to watch an actual good Louisiana-set horror film. This one is legitimately one of the most underrated horror films out there - the atmosphere is incredible, the protagonist is smart, the performances are fantastic (Gena Rowlands!) and the twist is so ingenious and shocking.
And given how lazy the script for Us was, I fully believe Jordan Peele copied the pivotal part of this movie in Get Out - it's a great script for how it used social commentary, but calling it "original" and awarding it an Oscar when Skeleton Key exists and is so overlooked pisses me off to no end.

I adore the setting and production design, the fact that this had a $43 million dollar budget and every regional cliche you can think of, Hudson vs Rowland, and how this is nothing like the movie we all (or at least I)thoughtit would be. I dug this very 2005 southern pulp back then and still do now, it moves quickly and it’s the type of light PG-13 horror yarn that my parents would watch (them telling me about watching this recently inspired my revisit lol), plus there’s solid suspense, an unexpected kicker of an ending, and John Hurt fine tuning his catatonic paycheck role for Crystal Skull.
Anyways, I’m glad I gave this another go after so long… it weirdly brought back memories of what my life was like as a 20 year old, how much I love Spanish moss, and $2.99 previously viewed dvd racks from now defunct video stores.

A sturdy, spooky horror film that impresses with its evocative production design and committed performances. Kate Hudson vs. Gena Rowlands makes for an enjoyable late night watch.

Amazing how an ending can save a movie.

Nothing you ain't seen before but some patient direction, atmospheric production design, and sturdy supporting cast (Not just Gena Rowlands but John Hurt as a barely-ambulatory, completely non-verbal, possibly scary old man) put this over.

First draft of Jordan Peele's Get Out is quite entertaining.

This is one criminally underrated horror flick right here. Kate Hudson is not the kind of actress that you think of in horror films, normally I’d think she’d be miscast here, but she’s great. She’s the kinda actress that when given the right material with a bit of meat (see also The Killer Inside Me) she becomes so much more than a romcom princess. She’s even more impressive in this because the woman she’s sharing the screen with, Gena Rowlands, is a living legend and arguably one of the best actresses we’ve ever seen.
I’m a big fan of anything set in the South, or anything to do with New Orleans really, and this is as southern and as New…

Atmosphere and a good tale. Two key ingredients for any good ghost story, most certainly present here and the saving grace of this film.
I loved the setting and the brooding atmosphere that went with it. The narrative is drenched in it and practically guarantees an interesting plot. Even though there are patches where it rather drags, its final act makes up for that.
The cast is decent and the direction solid, I guess my biggest problem with it is that, for a ghost story, it just isn't scary enough. Come to think of it, it isn't scary at all. And that's a shame. As great as the atmosphere is, I had hoped for a bit more.
Still, it's most definitely worth the time.

That's what Kate Hudson gets for having massive colonizer energy.

Peter Sarsgaard doing his best southern Edward Norton impression. I liked the twist, fun movie.

"We think too much about the time we have left. We don't spend it living"
Caroline Ellis (Kate Hudson), a young nurse disillusioned with her job in a palliative care facility, takes a private job in an isolated mansion helping Violet Devereaux (Gena Rowlands) care for her husband Ben (John Hurt) who has been immobilized by a stroke. What starts out as a nice change of pace becomes a scary situation when unexplainable events begin happening around the house.
Disclaimer - I only watched this for Gena Rowlands who is so good she manages to make even the nothing character she has to work with here a little interesting. The Skeleton Key does have some cool stuff going for it.…
